Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has a growing team of animal therapy volunteers, also known as the SEA Pups, who are here to offer pets, cuddles, and hugs – while helping calm traveler’s nerves. Pups and their human handlers are typically stationed at our Central Terminal, though you may also find them at our N Concourse. SEA aims to add more animal therapy teams to our SEA Pups program. Our community of animal therapy volunteers are invaluable ambassadors for both the airport and the Puget Sound region. Located primarily at our Central Terminal and North Concourse, animal therapy teams, also known as the SEA Pups, focus on putting travelers at ease by offering pets, cuddles, and a chance to destress. Schedule
- 2-hour shifts bi-weekly or weekly, at designated shift times of 10 am – 12 pm, 1 pm – 3 pm, and 5 pm – 7 pm.
- Minimum 6-month commitment.
- Occasional event opportunities outside typical scheduled shifts.
Job Description
- Put travelers at ease through offering therapy animal pets, cuddles, and photo opportunities
- In conjunction with Animal Therapy Assistant volunteers, ensure travelers adhere to gel-pet-gel when interacting with animals
- When applicable, answer traveler’s questions often around wayfinding
- Assist with Airport special events and projects as needed
- Complete online post-shift survey providing customer feedback
- Other duties as assigned
Qualities Desired
- Sound independent judgement and able to positively represent the Port of Seattle and SEA to external stakeholders
- Friendly personality with customer service disposition
- Strong communication skills for welcoming travelers and effectively answering questions
- Flexible and wiling to be a team player
- Must be able to adhere to Volunteer Program dress code and Program guidelines referenced in the Volunteer Handbook
Position Requirements
- Therapy animals are required to be current on rabies and DHPP vaccinations
- Accredited with either the Pet Partners or Reading with Rover organizations. Pet Partners teams are ideally rated ‘complex, ’ though predictable ratings are permissible after successful walkthrough with SEA Pups team
- Track record of animal therapy in ‘complex’ environments preferred, with minimum 6-months animal therapy experience required.
- 18+ years old
- Successfully complete reference and Credential Center airport badging process, which involves passing a background check in line with the Port of Seattle’s employment policy
- In order to receive an airport badge, applicants must possess a Social Security Number
Volunteer Program Benefits
- Training and ongoing learning opportunities provided Therapy teams are required to make a 6-month minimum commitment, either with bi-weekly or weekly shift activeness, from the date they receive accreditation
- Discounts at SEA stores and restaurants
- Airport parking is provided during a volunteer’s shift and 3-weeks of vacation. Airport parking is available annually after completing the minimum 6-month commitment
